MATCH REPORT vs WICKHAM ST PAUL AWAY - 23.06.24

02 Jul 2024

Good afternoon all

This is the last game we played as the fixture for 30.06 was postponed to next week.

On Sunday 23rd June we ventured to WSP to have a pint in the Victory - lovely pub opposite the ground.

After a bite to eat we went over to play, with a part make shift team due to some unavailability.

This included me with my damaged hip, but we went out and led by our skipper, we elected to bat first.

Tris opened with his friend Simon Hobson - not played for 20 plus years!

They had a steady partnership before Tris was caught out for 19.

Simon was joined by Bev. Simon was out after some lovely shots and bowled for 14.

Nev came in to join Bev before Bev was caught out for 10.

It was then a long partnership between Nev and Chowny. Nev playing shots with fours, a six and rode

his luck but got his first 50 for the club.

Chowny departed after a long period in the middle before being caught out for 20.

I joined Nev in the middle but Nev departed soon after for a great knock of 77.

I was joined by Daley, who was bowled for 0. Pacey also made a quick visit for 0 too.

Cal came in and got a quick single for 1.
The overs running out, Superted came in for 1 ball and said just hit it and ill (try to) run. We got 2 runs.

Ted finishing on 2 not out and I finished 5 not out.

We got 161 runs from our 30 overs.

Now, during the first innings, we had some amusement.......typically at my own expense.

James Cleverly came over whilst I was scoring and introduced himself as the Home Secretary and

asked how we were getting on. I said your team is batting and we are from Leavenheath......after what

felt like an age, it clicked, he meant he was The Home Secretary - I knew he looked familiar.

Mike and Sheila Gordon found this highly amusing as did the rest of our team. He departed quickly

to speak to the other players on a drinks break. Needless to say, he though I was an idiot haha!

Anyway after a brief break, we went out to field to defend the target.

Superted and Chowny opened.

Ted finished his 4 overs with no wicket for 17.

Chowny at the other end went to finish his spell but no breakthrough and finished 6 overs for 33.

We had a good run out to get their number 2 out - not sure which order  this was as not noted in the

book but I know Bev and Ted were involved.

Daley was steaming in from the pavilion end but was getting no balled for back foot but he did get the

his first wicket of the season, caught by Simon at point - not sure he knew too much about it but it stuck!

Daley finished 1 for 37 from 4 overs.

Lee and Cal bowled.

Lee was the only other bowler to get a wicket and finally bowled their opener for 51.

We were then trying to buy some wickets.

Cal finished 0 for 16 from 4.

I launched an over of something and went for 10 from the over.

Simon came on to bowl but they chased the runs down in 25 overs.

It was a good game and everyone was involved, shame the result wasn't our way and another year

before we get back to winning ways down at WSP.

This week on Sunday we have West Bergholt visiting us at the Heath for 1.30pm start - pitch and

weather permitting.

Team sheet out soon - if not replied, please let Tris know asap as we are down a couple of players.

I will not be about Sunday so will get details and send over a match report from someone else.

Have a good week.

Thanks
Dave
