Good morning all

Match Report vs Dedham Home – Sunday 12th May

After losing the first 3 matches to the wet weather and 1 game to lack of numbers, everyone was eagerto get this game on. The start of the week, we still had a pond to contend with, which had been sectioned off like a crime scene by Rob and Minndo. However, the dry days leading up to Sunday helped and with assistance from Rob, Bevan, Minndo and Pacey on the roller, the game was on.

This the first game of the season and the skipper (Tris) was sunning himself in Turkey, Vice Skipper (me) out injured for most if not all of the season, we held a discussion and Stew Wells rolled back the years and came in to be skipper for the day.

After a getting ground prepared, a gentle practice in the new nets, we went to the Hare & Hounds for pre match beers. We were ready.

I believe we lost the toss and were elected to bat first. I was armed with the score book and the new electronic score board and we were ready to go.

Logan and Jeppo were elected to open the batting. Steady pace was set at 5 an over until Jeppo was caught at backward point for 18 after 6 overs. Logan was getting his eye in and hitting a few fours and sixes, was joined by Nev at number 3. Neve with 100% strike rate but was caught behind for 2. Stuart Pacey in at 4 and was a brief visit before being bowled for 1.

Bevan joined Logan at the crease and this was a partnership for nearly 10 overs, Logan went on to get his 50 in style with a 6 before being bowled by the slowest full toss. Departed for 54 runs. A good start to the season and pre-season nets showed they can work!

I had messed the scorebook up as all the bowlers looked the same  but this was soon rectified and Minndo came in at number 6 to join Bevan. A steady partnership before Minndo was bowled for 22. Bevan now being the anchorman, was joined very briefly by Wellsy, who scored 1 run before being bowled (asked to ensure it is mentioned he played on)

The return of the Hulk, sorry Cal Waugh, saw a brief stint and scored 1. Our newest member, Lee Tredgett joined Bevan in the middle. No one knew what to expect but there was experience there just a bit rusty. Even if he was batting with half a thumb – a longer story than need to share here for now, don’t want to scare him off yet!

After facing a fair share of the balls, Lee departed for 4. Bevan was still going and achieved his 50, was joined by Chown. Chowny took a few balls to get going but was getting a few runs and score a couple of 4s. Bev was caught out after a solid spell in the middle and left with 62. Chowny and Superted were in the middle. Chowny was having some success with his trademark cut shot. However, the innings came to an end when they put a fielder where Chowny likes to play, he obviously did not notice and was caught out. Chowny caught out for 15 and Superted not out on 0.

Total with extras was 189 – after 39.4 overs. No one at this point knew if this was enough but after tea break, it was Dedhams turn to bat and Wellsy to lead the team to the field.

Superted and Wellsy opened the bowling. This started off but they started to take a shine to Superted and his spell ended after 5 over for 23 runs.

Wellsy stayed on and the other end was Jeppo. At this point, Wellsy already had 3 maidens and the Dedham team whispers around the pavilion, was to see you off and knew he only had 3 more overs. However, the change with Jeppo in to the attack, brought us our first wicket in his second over – caught and bowled.

Drinks break after 15 overs saw Dedham 45 for 1.

Wellsy finished his spell – 8 overs, 5 maidens for 11 runs – no wickets. A steady start and hampered them scoring.

Our resident Aussie, Nev, joined the attack. Started with a Maiden – even with some very short deliveries. A few loose balls here and there and one ball going to a different dimension, his spell finished after 5 overs finished for 34 runs with no wickets, 1 maiden.

Jeppo finished his 8 overs – finishing with a further wicket on his last ball of the spell. 2 wickets for 35 runs from 8 overs, 1 maiden.

New boy, Lee was into the attack and in his 2nd over had bowled there number 4.

Dedham’s overseas player, number 1, was being touted as the batsman of the year around the pavilion, had passed his 50 and was seeing the ball too well for our liking.

Lee could have had him caught out by Jeppo on 3…..yes 3 separate occasions at deep mid on.  They were hardish chances – ill let the team make the final decision. All I know is, I though Jeppo had been shot as he laid face down for a few seconds. Lee then fielding his own ball. It is not very often we get to say Jeppo dropped chances but he did this time.

Logan was into the attack too. The Dedham boys were pushing for the win but Logan bowled their number 5 in the 2nd over. Drinks break at 30 overs saw Dedham 130 for 4.

Wickets was needed and mainly to get their opener out. He did finally depart from a good catch from Cal from Lee’s bowling.

However the number 6 & 7 were going at the bowlers now and we needed wickets.

Only one further wicket was to come and this was a caught and bowled from Logan.

Lee finished for 2 for 35 from 5  overs and did get the opener at the 4th attempt.

Logan finished 2 for 39 from 5 overs.

Cal had one ball but this went for 5 – 4 no balls and saw Dedham to a first win at ours for a long time.

Their opener getting 82 was the key, so will blame Jeppo for dropping him 3 times.

It was a good day out after a long wait to play and the pitch played well considering the week before.

I have probably missed a lot of information but I remember a few drinks after the game. Dedham obviously jubilant.

We await the return fixture. The Skipper and self proclaimed G.O.A.T, will want to avenge this.

We wait for the next match this Sunday, away to Hadleigh.
