MATCH REPORT VS WICKHAM ST PAUL - AWAY

27 Jun 2023

Good afternoon

On Sunday we visited Wickham St Paul, on a glorious sunny and very hot day.

After a lovely roast at the Victory Pub, washed down with a couple of pints, we made away across the

road to play.

Tris lost the toss and we were elected to field first in the blistering heat for a 35 over match.

Wellsy and Jeppo were the Skippers choice to open the bowling.

Wellsy should of been given a wicket in the first over, with a glove behind - dubious decision - but

he plugged away but although tight bowling with 3 maidens he bowled his spell 7 overs 0 for 15 runs.

At the other end Jeppo was also doing his best to get a wicket but with no luck. 1 maiden and finished

his 7 over spell with 0 for 35 runs.

Logan and Dan Common were the first change.

Dan was bowling into the wind and managed 3 overs in his first spell - no wickets in this spell

Logan at the other end creating chances, 1 maiden, but no wickets and had to finish his spell early at

5.3 overs due to an injured shoulder. Tris finished his over but with no wickets. Logey finished 5.3 overs

0 for 24 runs.

After Dan's spell, Neville came on to bowl. He didn't finish his over and I took over to finish the over.

After a single off the first ball - which was going wide - I ended up bowling one of the openers with the

2nd ball. This was breakthrough we needed and to build on. Unfortunately, my 2nd over went for 7 runs

and I was pulled off.

After Skinner's brief spell at the other end, 2 overs 0 for 9, Common came on from the other end with

the wind behind him. The batsman, who was dubiously not out, was still in and working his way to his

100 - which he got by the end of the game.

The other batsman was Dan's though, and 2nd over into his 2nd spell and took a caught and bowled

After both spells, finished 7 overs 1 for 43 runs.

We saw Chowny bowl one over at each end and unfortunately took a liking to the bowling trying to get

their tally up - 2 overs 0 or 29 runs

Bevan, first overs for a long while bowled remaining overs into the wind and finished 0 for 29 runs from

his 4 overs.

After being in the sun - although a bit windy - Wickham finished on 202 for 2 from 35 overs.

If decisions had gone our way and more catches were - not naming anyone other than Logan!

Who knows what we would be chasing but the target was set - 203 for the win!

After a brief break, it was our turn to bat and chase down the runs.

Tris and Logey opened the batting.

Tris underway quickly - running a couple of double runs with his dodgy knee and was finding his feet

at the crease.

Logey, after getting a 4, was bowled soon into his innings.

Weavers was to join Tris at the crease and they put on a good partnership before Tris was to depart

for 74 runs, after a great catch on the boundary - which any other day would have been 6.

Weavers was joined by Bevan for a while before being bowled by Faz, just after getting 51 runs.

The run chase was on.

Dan getting excited with 2 singles and a 6 before being bowled by Faz too.

It was my turn. 149 on the board when I came to the crease.

I attempted to get my eye in with Tris's voice bellowing from the boundary to go for it as plenty in the hut.

After shouting I bet you can't hit it for a 6, I did my best to try and put it in his lap at the club house but

not quite. Another call, bet you can't do it again - so I did. I was out of puff by then but the vital over

with 16 runs contributed by Bevan and I, had us requiring 22 runs from 4 overs.

I departed in the 34th over for 23 runs, after coming down the wicket and getting stumped.....

2nd time this season!

Wellsy came in and got two quick doubles and set us up to need 1 run for the win from the last over.

Bevan facing and kept us waiting until the 4th ball to hit the winning runs.

Bevan with a good solid knock of 30 out and Wellsy not out on 4.

2nd good win on the bounce chasing the runs down.

We now travel to Benidorm tomorrow with 2 games - one Friday and Saturday. They do not count

towards averages or fantasy. I will get the lads to write up a tour report - not too much detail - but

details on LCC 40th Anniversary tour - I won't be in any fit state to write anything and will forget by

the time I am home.

Next game in England is on Sunday 9th July away to Hadleigh.

Thanks

Dave
