Match report On an overcast, slightly drizzly day we batted first against our hosts, Wickham St Paul. Flummoxed by their multi-million pound scoreboard, I proceeded to do what I do best and break something. They are now sans a ‘6’ on their runs total! Tris and ‘One Run Bev’ took the game to WSP with some excellent batting. At one point Bev was on 40 odd and Tris 30 odd when Tris decided to up the ante just a smidge; an over, 24 runs including three 4s and two 6s, a flock of very lucky mallards - who wisely waddled off after muttering their disapproval - and one exasperated chain-smoking off spinner (who had a much needed fag to hand at any available opportunity).
When Tris scored his hundred it looked very likely that he could go on to get 150. However, he was out lbw for 112. This brought Minns to the crease who did well, keeping the scoreboard going along at a fair rate of knots. Before long he had racked up his second fifty in succession. This left Bev to get his century, which he did with the first ball of the last over. He shall now be known as ‘One Hundred and One Run Bev!’
Leavenheath 277-2 declared off 39. 4 overs.
Wellsy opened the bowling as usual and was rewarded with the first of four wickets when Bev took the catch of the season so far at 2nd slip. KP, when he had sorted out his line and length, bowled well too – taking two wickets with superb off-cutters. Stewie got another three, two bowled and another catch by Bev at 2nd slip who decided not to mince around this time and take it at the first attempt. Sooo…with a fifer there for the taking, what does Wellsy go and do? Only drop the easiest c and b ever!
Barry and Gary proved to be an effective spin duo taking 2 wickets apiece and before we knew it we were in the aptly named ‘The Victory’ pub celebrating a 220 run win!
