Leavenheath Cricket Club Won by 103 runs

Match report I think I’m the only person who can leave an hour and a quarter before and still be half an hour late for an event! Between having made a wasted journey to the Hare, having no mobile phone or internet signal and being completely flummoxed by Sudbury’s one way system (when I visit Sudbury I park up at Roys, Sudbury’s supermarket for the downtrodden…which is cruelly located next to a Waitrose), I ended up back at the Chilton Industrial Estate petrol station again half an hour later. Bizarrely I saw Barry’s van on one of my five trips around Sudbury, and I was just about to follow him when it occurred to me he hadn’t been named on the team sheet. In the petrol station a man overheard my predicament and kindly said to follow him as he was heading out past that way. So at 2:30 pm I rocked up to some rich person’s home, and seeing the ground in the distance proceeded to drive across their land, avoiding a few oaks along the way, before parking up, giving my cricket bag a good kicking before calmly saying hello to the lads. Also…Barry was there after all?!
‘One run Gordon’ (harsh and not my nickname) had already been dismissed caught for (guess?), receiving a ball which rose sharply off the pitch. This brought Mindo/Minnsy in alongside Logey. They batted brilliantly with some fine stroke play and the scoreboard ticked along pleasingly. Stuart, having scored 62 with eight 4s and two 6s, holed out to long on/off (can’t remember which, but it was definitely long something!) which brought Wellsy to the crease. The fine batting continued and Mindo showed his athleticism with some well-taken singles. Upon reaching his fifty, Adam kissed the Leavenheath badge on his shirt. Fair play…she is a beautiful woman! Not long after he was out LBW for 56 (six 4s, one 6). This brought the venerable Mr. Carr to the crease who declared to Stewart that those well-taken singles, although nice, would no longer be entertained! So Wellsy smashed a few more before being caught on the boundary for 45, a shot which would have taken him to fifty. The third great batting performance of the innings in succession. The rest of the innings we lost a couple more wickets whilst Andy batted fine for 13 not out. 226-6…Top Draw!
At tea, although there was no Victoria Sponge (the edible sign of a truly elite cricket tea!), there was some lovely jam roly polys amongst an assortment of other delicious cakes. Again the plates were too small, so I had to go back two times to refill my plate. I think in future I’ll do what Alan Partridge did at that travel lodge which is equidistant between Norwich and London and bring my own plate to satisfy my rather large appetite!
Bev opened the bowling and soon snared a wicket when Porsche (Ferrari) took a good, sharp catch at close extra cover. Callum bowled well too taking a wicket with an off-cutter onto the stumps. While the wickets then dried up for a bit, our bowling economy remained tight with some good ground fielding helping aid it. The next wicket (I’m pretty sure) was a run out. Barry deserves the credit for this, making a swallow dive to his right to stop a certain four. With the batsmen having set off running, then stopping mid-wicket, it was left to Bev to lob it into Webb to take off the bails. Porsche bowled well, unlucky not to get a wicket and Wellsy bowled excellently as usual, this time being rewarded with a couple of wickets (one bowled, one caught). I took a couple of wickets via full tosses (which gives me the idea to always bowl them…nah, bad idea!). An LBW (I think the batsman probably had words afterwards with his teammate who gave him out judging by the look on his face!) and another catch by Porsche (sorry, Ferrari). Then Logey came on and got two wickets in two balls (caught behind by the safest paws in the business – Mr Dave Webb – and a clean bowled). This left just left one wicket to get with a few overs to spare. After a mix up between the batsmen and with Bev having thrown the ball to Dave, Webby whipped off the gloves and threw/chucked the ball to me at the bowler’s end where I knocked the bails off to end the match with a two base out baseball-style dismissal. A 103 run victory!
A great win! With Logey away in Portugal for the next two matches (enjoy your holiday captain), Wellsy takes over the reins. I will be pestering him for me to open the batting now that I have a grip on my bat!
