Match report
I feel like a naughty school boy circa 2002. Let me set the scene: My history teacher gave me an extension on my A Level coursework. This extension went three days into the Easter holidays. Three weeks later, I still had not finished it when I attended the Headmaster’s Assembly (a rare event for me to attend). My eyes happened upon my history teacher, who happened to be giving me the ‘I will kill you’ look! I made sure to avoid him for the rest of the day. This is very much the same scenario which is playing out between me and my match reports’ editor-in-chief at present. I believe I have been covertly punished as my bowling figures for this match are nowhere to be found?! (Update: Now rectified when a mysterious complaint was filed on whatsapp!).
Bures batted first. Tris made one funny comment (when Webb, upon hearing an ice cream van said to Wells starting his run-up: “Hang on Stewart, ice cream van.”, Tris quipped “Ice cream van? You guys need a kebab shop!”) before departing. His opening partner, who managed a solitary run off eight or ten so overs (cue much ribbing in the pub afterwards by Tris) soon followed him back to the pavilion, which brought nos. 3 and 4 to the crease. They launched an aerial assault on us, batting superbly. I have never seen someone hit the ball so sweetly and so far as they did off Logey’s bowling which wasn’t at all shabby. Sometimes though, you just have to doth your cap to class! The breakthrough did eventually come however; who made it, I can’t remember. All in all, I feel our bowling and fielding were decent (this may, or may not, have been augmented by the kind loan of three Bures members to make up our numbers!). Everyone got in with the wickets - Quinton ‘Tintin’ Newcombe with two and wearing himself out in the process with the longest run-up I’ve ever seen whilst on Leavenheath duty, but best of which was Bev with three when he dismissed their last batsmen, clean bowled, with the last ball of the innings (apparently it’s quite a rare event for us to get Bures all out).
So…could we get the 230 runs required? First, however, the more important matter of tea! It was a good spread, but I think I’ll mention to Tris next time I see him that bigger plates are needed! Portion control and all…
Despite losing Quinton early in the innings, things looked promising with Logey continuing his outstanding form with the bat, ably assisted by Bev (16), then one of their players (15), and finally Mr. Paul Collingwood himself – Wellsy – who blazed his way to 28. However, when Stuart smashed the ball straight to backward square leg (it was a good, sharp catch but a foot or so either side and that would most probably have been a drop…or the most amazing catch ever seen in village cricket) for 38, we knew the match was most likely lost. Despite this I deluded myself into thinking I could take the match home with Webb first, then Callum. The fact that I didn’t have a grip on my bat (haven’t in two plus seasons) put the fear of God into all the close fielders and I managed to survive the hat-trick ball and even hit a four! My thoughts turned to me hitting 90 or so not out, winning the match and being the toast of all Leavenheath. The very next ball I was bowled!
And so we lost by 98 runs. Our display in defeat, however, was good and a good time was had in the pub afterwards. Happy Days!
