Billerciay Vets v Leavenheath Cricket Club LCC on Sun 24 May 2015 at 2pm
Leavenheath Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report The match everyone at Leavenheath looks forward to the most due to the great location and condition of Billericay’s ground amongst other things.
I forgot to procure some oxylazine in the days before as planned, so I couldn’t spend the entire match in a blissful stupor. Instead I spent it fighting to stay awake. Turning up at the Hare and Hounds really hoping to secure a lift as I hadn’t had any sleep after my night shift, I found myself (something beginning with ‘s’) out of luck. Even more alarmingly, I had important cargo to transport down the A12; Mr Carr - our esteemed President - and Mr Sherriff - your man if you want to know anything about flowers! Fuelled by vinegar-soaked, half a salt-shaker takeaway chips and a Coke and the fact that Andy and Rob were generous enough to give me petrol money for my near empty Rav 4 (the needle was below empty, but the tank does 40 miles – and not a metre more - in reserve!), we made it down to Billericay.
The match, as usual, was to be time and their captain won the toss and decided to bat first. Wellsy almost took out their octogenarian opening batsman with a first ball beamer and soon took his wicket…quick enough for me to not realise he didn’t bat with gloves?! I’m afraid that was the only wicket for some considerable time until Sherriff took a wicket, Wellsy taking the catch. Their captain then joined their wicket-keeper batsman at the crease and batted until rain forced an early tea. He then decided to go back out to bat in order to secure a score of 175 or more, so Mindo was brought on to bowl to hurry that scenario along. He did his job admirably, 13 runs off the over! Billericay 178-2 off however many overs.
Despite Bev’s best attempt at breaking their scoreboard, we set off at a fast early pace, fuelled by angry batting. Despite the early loss of Tris, Wellsy scored a nice, quickfire 24 and Little did likewise (25), batting well in his usual attacking style. However, a stereotypically English middle order collapse meant that Logey changed style, batting more conservatively in order not to throw the game away. There was a particular incident of dissent from their wicketkeeper, who thought he had both caught and stumped Stuart; something, which along with their skipper slowing the match down by constantly towelling the ball and moaning about us being boring, only endears us more to them.
Fortunately, the innings was stabilised with the pairing of Carr at no. 9 and Logan. We reached the target with a couple of overs to spare, given that it was 20 overs from 6:30 and they were still batting at 5:30pm approx. Carr scored 15 valuable runs and Logan carried his bat with an excellent, well-judged 91 not out.
I would like to mention my contribution to this match, which was to take over both scorebooks and the scoreboard at one point (when Bev had to go pad up) for a few overs before Webby rescued me. It was tough, I got cramp, but the scorekeeping was immaculate – I pride myself on it! Now to work on the batting and bowling side of things.
While the Beer Guzzlers headed off to the TOWIE style beer festival in Stock, I drove Andy and Rob back to the ‘Heath. Just as I felt I was about to nod off on the A12, Andy commented on how nippy the car was! I just smiled and nodded, wound the window down and put pedal to metal in order to make sure club royalty returned home safely.
