Match report
With the election and all the political parties bogus manifesto promises having just passed, I faithfully adhered to the core principle of the Chown Family Charter which is to be, if not late, then cutting it bloody fine! I arrived, after following a van all the way from West Bergholt to the actual road of Leavenheath’s ground – I’m sure he thought I was some deranged road-rager - with beer in tow to find the team already in the field. However, as I brought beer – something which is always welcome at Leavenheath CC – I escaped repercussion in the form of having to write a match report (wait, hang on?).
Logey snared the first of Dedham’s wickets, Dave Webb perhaps taking the finest catch of the season so far by sticking his big right paw out to pluck the fast-moving edged ball out of the air. Our fielding was the best it has been this season, Little and Taylor taking good catches in the deep. However, after 20 overs, powered by a strong middle order batting partnership, the score was 119-2? to Dedham. The fact that we were able to restrict them to 207-6/7 after 40 overs was testament to good bowling by Logan, Boorman, Waugh, and Sheriff in particular, and our good fielding.
Now, our batting…this is where things went Pete Tong! Their opening bowler and their left-armer (who probably got a couple of wickets through his restrained appeals alone!) tore through our line-up in no time. Unfortunately this meant I had to leave the scorer’s table rather too soon, only I made sure I was back to doing what I do best the very next ball. Well, that would have been the case if our last two remaining wickets hadn’t fallen in the time it took for me to get unpadded. 58 all out! Once again…tight match, harsh lines!
Next Sunday we play the return Sudbourne Hall fixture where we welcome Tyke and his drunk dog-food eating habits back into the team. Unfortunately, we are one short and my canvassing of somebody to fill that 11th man has so far fallen pitifully short having had to ask an Italian at work if he could play! Oh well, either way, Stuart has promised Victoria a win as a belated birthday present! We better deliver…
