Match report
One day I am going to write a book about how my sporting ambitions didn’t quite pan out the way I envisaged them. Things like how I won the Year 6 high jump competition with a huge 1.36m jump only to realise that it was because the bar (which was actually a foam-padded rope!) sagged in the middle; how, because I was good at throwing a cricket ball, I thought I could throw a javelin miles, only I never really saw the back end of the javelin as it clonked me on the back of my head; finally, and most shamefully of all, how I never made it into the Suffolk U14s as my Dad and I spent a couple of hours driving around Mildenhall never to find the cricket ground (the days before sat nav when you had to be good at directions!).
Anyway, the day started the night before (for me with the new night job – yay, I got a job!), so by the time I reached the Hare and Hounds to meet the lads, tanked up on a flask of triple espresso coffee, I was averaging sleep like my batting average = 0. Interestingly enough, the receptionist at work used to date a cricketer. When she told me this, I thought “yeah – probably some shit village cricketer like Chris Chown!”, but she actually meant Graham Napier!
With the game all the way up in Sudbourne (near Orford), sat nav was going to be a necessity. Only my phone wasn’t playing fair. This is where the Green Hornet comes in! Remember I said last week that spaces to travel in the love wagon were going quick (well, I was right – tickets were like gold dust and were actually block-booked by the Beer Guzzlers within an extremely swift pint of becoming available!). So, it was follow the Green Hornet, or else get lost. But, as I followed behind, I slowly came to understand Gallo’s love affair with it. It has a certain magnetism which reminded me of my own beloved Wibble; a red N-reg Nissan Micra with a licence plate ending in WBL, who, once she got up to 70 – after 10 mins approx. – did a little booty wibble! These thoughts occupied by mind until Woodbridge when suddenly I was briefly separated from the Green Hornet and almost had to make a May-day call to Logey. Eventually we all made it to Sudbourne Park CC.
In lovely surroundings, but on a cold, damp day we fielded first. Logey thought it would be amusing to put Dave Little sweeping on the boundary for the second match in a row having not done so since he was sixteen. Poor Dave had to retrieve many a ball from the muddy field behind him! Wellsy again bowled well for no reward while Bev had the curse of his parents watching and was carted around the ground. Charlie then came on and made the breakthrough, c and b; Logey soon following suit when Gallo took ‘The Juggler’ catch off his bowling. Fielder of the year is certainly looking within his dodgy grasp.
Just as whispers were going around the ground that Luca would take his first wickets for Leavenheath before his Dad took his next, Stewart came back on and took two wickets which was followed by one for me, then finally Barry bowled one of their batsman off the last ball of the innings. Sudbourne Hall CC 157-6 off 40 overs.
Tea was an amazing spread; we even had butter…a novelty at Leavenheath these days! Then, into bat we went. The less I say, the better. In fact, despite scoring for most of it, I can remember very little other than that mysterious batsman called ‘extras’ making top score once again. I did remark that we had a strong batting line-up with Barry returning after a one match absence and KP making his season’s debut, but alas, although KP and Wells looked assured, I was in at No.11 with only 90 odd on the board. Having scored a few runs and gearing up to lead Leavenheath home, I look a large stride forward to a ball going down leg. The ball hit my pad, the Sudbourne Hall wicket-keeper and bowler barely appealed, but Gallo decided I was out. Gallo brought me a pint later which I thought was only fair! Thus, the innings ended with us some 50 runs short of the target with 5 overs remaining.
This Sunday we are away to Gestingthorpe who I am told contain two quicks of ‘brown your pants’ pace. So far, we are struggling for numbers so I will be using my substantial influence to woo local villagers over to the dark side.
