Match report
Match Report – Leavenheath CC vs. West Bergholt CC – 12TH April 2015
The day got off to a bad start when I ran over a partridge on the way to the ground. On a sunny but blustery afternoon, we won the toss and decided to bowl first. Wellsy, free from the shackles of captaincy, opened the bowling. His first ball…a four! However, from then onwards he bowled superbly with figures of 8-4-15-0 and was unlucky not to get a couple of wickets. One incident which should have been a wicket turned into what will be one of the talking/laughing points of the season and will be a shoo-in for Leavenheath CC folklore. With the West Bergholt No. 2 having skied the ball up into the atmosphere, Dave Webb, our lithe and nimble wicket-keeper, charged in like a rhinoceros to position himself under the catch. However, his progress was rather unfortunately halted by the stumps which happened to impale him in the groin, and, unable to hang onto the catch, he proceeded to fall over taking all three stumps with him.
Bev bowled decently, although his few bad balls were punished clinically. I then came on to bowl my new-fangled left-arm orthodox, but keeping to type bowled a mixture of good and bad within every over. Logey entered the fray with his metronomic medium-fast and with twenty overs gone - and drinks – the score was 85-0. The next five to ten overs were where things got away from us. My last over was atrocious and then Dave Little got a ribbing from less diplomatic teammates – “Come on Dave, I want this over kept under 30, yeah?” – for his two overs. The West Bergholt No.1 was racing toward his hundred, the No.2 his fifty.
The breakthrough was eventually made by Logey who got the No.2 to drag the ball back onto the stumps for 60 odd runs. Not long after the no.1 (demanded by his teammates) retired having scored his century. This act alone probably saved us fifty runs.
Barry Lock, who I can confirm does have the ‘firmest handshake you will ever get from a man’, came on with his spin bowling and was the key to unlocking (excuse the pun) most of the West Bergholt batting partnerships. He took three wickets – two catches (Logan, Webb) and an LBW. The other two wickets were taken by Tris Skinner – two catches (Lock, Chown).
In the end West Bergholt closed the innings on 247-6. As usual, our fielding should have been better with several mis-fields and dropped catches, although to be fair some of the chances were hard. However, in the bellowed words of Dave Low, my esteemed juniors’ cricket manager at Colchester and East Essex, “CATCHES WIN MATCHES.” He also happened to save a certain four with his belly at square leg (umpire) off my bowling back in 1994. Absolute legend!
After tea it was our turn to bat. It soon became apparent that West Bergholt had some good and rather fast bowlers. Charlie was unfortunately back in the pavilion after a few overs, getting out trying to up the early slow pace (5 runs off 5 overs). Logey then started to amass runs, showing some great technique, but was out for 24 when he mis-timed his shot to mid-wicket. Gallo (he of Wasim Akram bowling, Brendon McCullum batting…in the nets at least) was next out having scored 8. Gordon, Little and Wells all hit some nice shots but were out before making significant scores. Skinner and Lock resisted the inevitable well for a few overs until departing, Sheriff scored a couple of glorious fours before being caught, I nudged and nurdled and Webb launched a big four. So, having played with a straight bat for a few overs and not scoring any runs, I decided to go back to a short-pitched slow ball and pull. Almost by script – I say script because of the amount of times I have been cruelly out this way – the ball barely bounced and I was out foot - sorry, leg - before wicket, thus ending the innings.
So..all out for 97! A most comprehensive thrashing at the bats and hands of superior opponents on the day. I did mention on twitter before the match whether we would be “topping up our pints with tears of celebration or commiseration?”. Well, if Gallo is anything to go by – ordering a quarter pint of Carlsberg topped up by three quarters soda in the pub afterwards (a lager bottoms?), I genuinely worry for the welfare of certain members of the team.
Next we entertain Wickham St. Paul at home on Saturday 18th April where we hope to put in a better display. Gallo is doing the afternoon tea and I have a sneaking feeling he will cook up a feast worthy of a Michelin star!
