MATCH REPORT vs GESTINGTHORPE - AWAY - SUNDAY 9TH JUNE

14 Jun 2024

Good evening all

Sorry for the delayed report, been a busy boy this week!

I wanted to updated on last weeks game before our next match tomorrow.

Last Sunday we visited Gestingthorpe. After a couple of pre-match beers we arrived to the pitch on

one of the coldest days in June I can remember. Sitting in a jumper and jeans and still shivering.

However, the boys went out to field first with only 10, with Wellsy and Logan opening the bowling.

After 7 overs each, neither could get a wicket but kept the bowling tight and after 14 overs, they were

only on 50. Some variable bounce out there created chances but outfield was quick

Wellsy finished 7 overs for 0 for 17, 2 maidens

Logan finished 7 overs for 0 for 31, 2 maidens

It was over to Cal and Dan to be first change. Cal launched the ball about fifteen feet above the batsman

for his first ball but that was his 'loosner' and went on to have a very good spell. He was the first to take

wickets and got their opener clean bowled and departed for 65. His first wicket maiden and the next over

he took out the other opener with a catch behind from Weavers.

Cal finished his 7 over spell with 2 for 16 with 2 maidens. He also had a drop from Dan in the field too!

Dan started his first spell of 3 overs well but the skip wanted to mix it up, later saying he wasn't bowling

very well........something like that. Nev was to come on and hopefully bring the Aussie magic.

Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and aquite a few balls were short and being put away. His 4th over

and last of his spell had so many no balls, I ran out of room in the scoring book!

Nev finished 4 overs for 0 for 33 - last over for 13 runs!

Lee was to take over at the other end but their batsman had his eye in and was going for the kill to get

their low score up to defend. Lee finished his spell 3 overs 0 for 22.

There is a runout in between all of this from sharp fielding from Bev and taken by Weavers, to remove

their number 3 for 2 runs.

However, also another dropped catch and looked like the best man was under it, but Bev dropped this

and worse, the batsman stayed at the crease for Bev's first over and took a shine to him.

First over went for 19 but back for his 2nd over and this was a maiden.......how the game goes.

Bev finished his spell after 3 overs and had a wicket, caught by Tris.

1 for 27, 3 overs, 1 maiden

Dan was brought on for the last over and bowled their new batsman with his last ball of the innings.

Dan finished 1 for 22 from 4 overs.

This is all very disjointed in terms of the events. We did lose Wellsy in the field after pulling up with

pulling his hamstring and Gestingthorpe kindly provided an extra player.

Gestingthorpe finished 171 for 5 from 35 overs.

After teas, Tris and Logan opened the batting. A slower start as hard to get away and Tris departed for

3 and was caught out.

Logan was joined by Bev and they have been the partnership scoring runs so far this season and went

on to not disappoint today. A partnership of 100 before the fall of the next wicket, which was Logey

in the 21st over. After getting his quick double to get to 51, he was out plumb LBW after the ball kept low.

Weavers joined the attack but for a short period as Bev was caught behind - I think he walked off before

being given, but departed for 45 runs.

Weavers was joined by Dan. Dan told by Tris to get his eye in first and then up the scoring as the chase

was on. 4 from the first shot was not what was expected and Dan went on to hit another 4 & a lovely 6.

He then got cocky and came down the wicket and was stumped for 19 runs.

Pacey came out and joined Weavers however, this wasnt long and Weavers departed via LBW for 12.

Pacey departed 2 balls later after being bowled however, aa sublime 4 runs from his new bat.

Now, at this point, 29 overs had  gone and we were on 141 - 31 runs to win from 6 overs with 2 wickets

and Wellsy (injured) remaining.

Nev and Cal put a few runs but Cal departed for 6, also being stumped. Lee joined Nev who was

knocking it about and played a couple of lovely 4's but with one wicket remaining, Wellsy padded up.

With the 2nd to last ball, Lee fell for 1 run and was caught out trying to score the runs.

Wellsy came out with 1 ball to go and we were on 168 - 4 to win.

Ball comes in and we thought it had the connection but it was fielded and only for 1 as Wellsy could

barely walk. Frustratingly we fell 2 short - 169 for 8 wickets.

Nev with a solid 21 runs and made it entertaining for last few overs, on a cold, bleak day.

This is the 2nd in 2 years of a close match we have lost there and will look to avenge this later in the

season at home.

Tomorrow we visit Bures for the Chris Ayres Memorial game - weather permitting - but planning to

go down and show our support. All are welcome and will be in the Eight Bells from midday.

Have a good evening
